symptoms: laptop will not boot, Windows / MacOS will not start, clicking or grinding sound delayed write failed messages recent development: SSDs no moving parts, lower power, faster access but currently more expensive per GB good for longer batt life NB: always keep a 2nd copy of your docs, photos, etc old saying: "There are two types of computer user: those who have experienced data loss, and those who will." fact of life: laptops get lost & stolen, HDs die, stuff gets deleted accidentally if your only copy is on laptop, your data is gone for good - not fun! esp if it contains your uni thesis, first novel or photos of your children some data can often be recovered by a specialist data recovery lab BUT don't rely on it MS used to give you a Windows install CD with your new laptop but stopped in last few years so always create the recovery discs when you get a new notebook - easier to reinstall
